In homeopathy, the totality of symptoms is central to case analysis. But does that mean every symptom belongs in the prescription?

Not necessarily.

A client may have a long list of symptoms, yet the challenge is determining which ones are actually relevant to the case at that moment.

In this episode of Strange Rare Peculiar, Denise and Alastair look at what happens when the homeopath makes the totality too large, too small, or simply focuses on the wrong part of the case.

Through examples involving a recurring joint complaint, a Berberis case, and PCOS, they explore how the same client can present several possible ways of looking at the case—and why deciding what actually needs to be treated is such an important clinical skill.

As Denise puts it:

“Too large a totality misses the mark. Too small a totality can suppress.”

So how does a homeopath know which symptoms matter most? When should the lens widen? When should it narrow? And how do Hahnemann’s instructions help guide that decision?

The conversation also returns to a larger question raised in recent episodes: if today’s cases are more complex, does homeopathy need different principles—or does complexity require practitioners to become more skilled in applying them?
