In this video (above), Bill Shevin, MD (retired), the current President of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Convention of the United States, explains that the HPUS (Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States) sets standards for safety, identity, purity, quality, and strength of homeopathic drugs.
Your support is essential for the HPCUS to continue to fulfill its’ mission of providing the most current and complete standards for the identification and manufacture of homeopathic medicines. Please donate and/or become a Friend today. Click the links below to learn more.

Hello, my name is Bill Shevin. I am the current President of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Convention of the United States. We publish the HPUS, the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.
The HPUS is recognized as an “official compendium’ by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. That recognition is the main reason that homeopathic drugs are still available in the US today. By publishing individual drug monographs, we set the standards for their safety, identity, purity, quality, and strength. By publishing guidelines for their production, manufacturers know what to do to ensure that what is said to be contained in the medicine’s packaging is, in fact, present. The same law gives the Food and Drug Administration the duty and authority to regulate all drugs, especially regarding their safety. Amendments to the act in 1962 added “effectiveness” to the FDA’s mandate.
The HPCUS can be understood as functioning in relationship to both manufacturers and regulators. In turn, those relationships extend outward to practitioners, educators, and the people who use homeopathic medicines. In other words, to all of us.
We live in a time of great change and many challenges. Meeting some of those challenges falls to the HPCUS. Our “White Paper project” is a science-based effort intended to close discrepancies in Good Manufacturing Practices that exist between the manufacture of conventional pharmaceuticals compared to what is rational and achievable for homeopathic medicines.
The White Paper project will enter a critical stage in the next several months. Success at that stage will lead to further stages. Getting this far has been a very complex and expensive process. Going further will require support from all sectors of the community. I discussed these matters in my address to JAHC last year.
The Convention has developed another initiative, called the Friends of the Pharmacopoeia program. This program is intended to increase awareness of the Pharmacopoeia and the Convention but also to promote opportunities to support our work. Those opportunities are not limited to financial support. The program is also intended to increase awareness of the interrelated nature of the sectors in the larger homeopathic community and to highlight new-paradigm tools for productive collaboration.
